Contrary to popular misconceptions, youth are not the future of the church. Youth are vital participants in the faith community today! At St. John’s, youth play an active role in worship, music, learning, service and fellowship.
On one or two Sundays a year the youth of St. John’s lead all aspects of the 10:30 a.m. worship. The youth pray, preach, sing, play instruments, and serve communion. The whole congregation looks forward to these inspiring services!
Youth meet about once a month for food, fun, and fellowship. Trips and servant events are scheduled throughout the year and an overnight retreat is generally included in program planning.
Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth graders participate in special faith instruction on most Sunday mornings between September and May from 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. On Pentecost Sunday, when the young people are in ninth grade, they affirm their faith in a Celebration of Confirmation.
Each year, two confirmed youth are elected to serve on the Congregation Council.
Teams of youth led by adults spend one week during the summer traveling to remote Appalachia to help rehabilitate housing in poverty stricken communities. The experience includes group building, faith formation, training in construction skills, and the satisfaction of a job well done. Participants regularly return moved spiritually and emotionally by the opportunity to serve and get to know others.
