Anne Ryan Dello Russo, our Nursery Attendant, will be retiring at the end of this year after 44 years of faithful service. The Christmas Eve 5:00 PM service will be Anne's last day serving among us. We will hold a Retirement Celebration for Anne on January 15, 2023 following the 10:30 service. More details about the celebration and ways for you to express your gratitude will be forthcoming. In the meantime, thank Anne for her amazing commitment to our congregation.

Sum of Us Author Visit: SIC Anti-Racism Committee is bringing Heather McGhee, author of The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper to Summit, December 1, 7:00 PM at Summit High School. Admission is free but you must register in advance. See the weekly email for a registration link.

Summit Warm Hearts: Summit Interfaith Council has created emergency shelter in houses of worship during November–March. St. John's will host Thursday and Friday nights in Hinman Hall and the Adult Lounge from 8:00 PM–6:00 AM. The SIC has hired vetted, trained and insured overnight hosts.

Summit Warm Hearts: To care for our homeless neighbors in need, the Summit Interfaith Council (SIC) has created a program, Summit Warm Hearts, of emergency housing in houses of worship during the cold winter months. Saint John's will begin hosting Thursday and Friday nights, starting November 17– March 10. Guests will stay in Hinman Hall and the Adult Lounge from 8:00 PM–6:00 AM. The SIC has hired vetted, trained and insured overnight hosts to be present during the hosting. We join Christ Church and Fountain Baptist, along with Beacon UU as the day center and shower facility, in hosting this program. There will be more information in the future about how we can support this life-saving ministry.

RIC Movie Night: The SJSM committee will be hosting a movie night, Saturday, November 19 at 7:00 PM, The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson. Popcorn and post-movie discussion included!

Thanksgiving Potluck, November 20: Join us after the 10:30 AM service to celebrate Thanksgiving. We will provide the turkeys, you bring your favorite Thanksgiving dish to share with your church family.

Appalachia Service Project Youth Mission Trip to repair substandard housing to make it warmer, safer, and drier, is being planned for July 8–15, 2023 (one week later than usual), and we hope to be assigned to Tennessee (9-10 hours from Summit). At this time we are looking for interested youth who have completed 8th grade and are at least 14 years old by the time of the trip, and adults who have an interest in home repair and leading our youth. Students participate in large ensembles (band, choir, orchestra) and chamber music; receive lessons on primary and secondary instruments; and enroll in electives such as chapel choir, church music, handbells, composition, jazz band, conducting, musical theatre, and more. In her role as a mother of a trans youth and a trans rights educator, as well as a life-long Lutheran in our synod, Jamie will share with us her unique insights about inclusion and justice for queer people.

Fiesta Latina: We are a sponsor for Summit’s annual celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. On Friday, September 16 from 6:00–9:00 PM on Summit's Village Green there will be a free concert and dance party music from Latin and South America, highlighting different cultures, dance and musical demonstrations, and have food trucks selling all types of delicacies.

Congregational Retreat—September 30–October 2: Join us for a fun weekend at Cross Roads for activities for all ages, faith formation, building connections with other church members, or simply to connect with nature. We have reserved the entire Christ Center, a modern hotel-like retreat space with private bathrooms. Speak to Pastor Scalet or Jane Bowman with questions.

Lutheran Disaster Response for those affected by the crisis in Ukraine with immediate financial support (100% of all donations are given). You can mail or drop off a check at the church office, or donate online and type “Ukraine” under the “Special Giving” field or in the memo line.

Reconciling in Christ: The Social Justice Social Ministry (SJSM) Committee is proposing that St. John’s becomes a “Reconciling in Christ” church. For nearly 50 years, ReconcilingWorks: Lutherans for Full Participation has advocated for the full welcome, inclusion, and equity of LGBTQIA+ Lutherans in the life of their Church, congregation, and community. Over the next several months, our congregation will offer several educational opportunities. Their goal is to present a motion at the February congregational meeting to adopt a welcome statement and officially become an RIC church. More details to come!

It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Christopher Harlow-Jennings as our next Director of Music. Christopher's first Sunday leading us in worship will be September 11. During the month of August, he will begin his work among us planning and preparing for the program year. Join us in welcoming Christopher and his family to our community. This is a moment of celebration and excitement for our congregation!

Monday Movie Nights: The SJSM committee will hold two evening movie nights this summer, in Hinman Hall to watch LGBTQIA+ themed movies. Our next movie will be on Monday, August 15 at 7:00 PM to watch Pride (2014). Popcorn and post-movie discussion included!
