Cereal for Loaves & Fishes Lent Collection. A traditional Lenten discipline is to give to those in need. We have been asked to collect boxed cereal for Loaves and Fishes. We ask everyone to bring at least one box of cereal for each of the six weeks of Lent. We have 240 so far!

Bethlehem Build Lent Collection. Our partner congregation, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, New Orleans, is building the 2nd affordable house on their property  Our Council has challenged us to raise $25,000 between now and Easter and we can match dollar for dollar up to $6,000 to support this project. We will celebrate with pancakes, bacon, and sausage before our Lenten fast begins. Come hungry!

Annual Congregation Meeting, February 12. There will be ONE worship service at 9:30 AM on this day. The meeting will immediately follow the service in Hinman Hall. Lunch will be provided. We will elect Congregation Council Members, elect Synod Assembly Voting Members, approve the Ministry Spending Plan, adopt the RIC Welcome Statement, receive reports, and set ministry vision for the future. Linda Espeland Funeral: In the sure and certain hope of the resurrection, we announce the death of longtime member Linda Espeland. A funeral service for Linda will be held at the church TODAY at 1:30 PM. A light reception will follow. 

Confirmation Class, TODAY, 5:30 PM: 7th - 9th graders will meet as they prepare to affirm their baptisms. Please pray for our confirmands as they explore their Lutheran faith.

Social Justice Social Ministry will lead a forum TODAY at 9:00 AM to introduce the proposed Welcome Statement for adoption at the Annual Meeting as part of the Reconciling in Christ process. It is very important that you come to this presentation and offer any feedback so that we are prepared to adopt this statement on February 12.

Children’s Choir & Children’s Faith Formation TODAY. Choir is open to children ages 5 and up. Rehearsals begin at 9:30-10:00 AM in the Choir Room on the lower level. Sum of Us Author Visit: SIC Anti-Racism Committee is bringing Heather McGhee, author of The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper to Summit, December 1, 7:00 PM at Summit High School. Summit Warm Hearts: To care for our homeless neighbors in need, the Summit Interfaith Council (SIC) has created a program, Summit Warm Hearts, of emergency housing in houses of worship during the cold winter months. Saint John's will begin hosting Thursday and Friday nights, starting November 17– March 10. Guests will stay in Hinman Hall and the Adult Lounge from 8:00 PM–6:00 AM. The SIC has hired vetted, trained and insured overnight hosts to be present during the hosting. We join Christ Church and Fountain Baptist, along with Beacon UU as the day center and shower facility, in hosting this program. There will be more information in the future about how we can support this life-saving ministry.

RIC Movie Night: The SJSM committee will be hosting a movie night, Saturday, November 19 at 7:00 PM, The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson. Popcorn and post-movie discussion included!

Thanksgiving Potluck, November 20: Join us after the 10:30 AM service to celebrate Thanksgiving. We will provide the turkeys, you bring your favorite Thanksgiving dish to share with your church family.

Appalachia Service Project Youth Mission Trip to repair substandard housing to make it warmer, safer, and drier, is being planned for July 8–15, 2023 (one week later than usual), and we hope to be assigned to Tennessee (9-10 hours from Summit). At this time we are looking for interested youth who have completed 8th grade and are at least 14 years old by the time of the trip, and adults who have an interest in home repair and leading our youth. Contact Laura Snyder for more information and to express interest.

Lutheran Summer Music (LSM), June 25–July 23. As the nation’s premier faith-based music academy this four-week, immersive residential performance and training program is for grades  8-12. Students participate in large ensembles (band, choir, orchestra) and chamber music; receive lessons on primary and secondary instruments; and enroll in electives such as chapel choir, church music, handbells, composition, jazz band, conducting, musical theatre, and more.
